- <p> He was the first black elected mayor of one of America's top
- three cities and has held the job for a record-breaking five
- terms, 19 years. But last week Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, 74
- -- affectionately called "Mayor for Life" -- announced that he
- would not run again next June. Bradley was known as a coalition
- builder who opened up government to the city's diverse ethnic
- groups, and his departure marks the end of an era. His legacy:
- both the resoundingly successful 1984 Olympics as well as the
- devastating 1992 riots.
